Record number of Americans living in poverty
The number of people living in poverty in America rose by nearly 4 million to 43.6 million in 2009 -the largest figure in the 51 years for which poverty estimates are available - the Census Bureau said Thursday.
The child poverty rate is the exact same as it was in 1964 when President Johnson created the welfare program.
Several years ago I was wholeheartedly involved in the effort to raise the level of educational attainment in the Los Angeles region. At that time I shared with my Board of Directors that we were the problem; meaning our thinking and actions. I proposed at that time, that in order to make the impact we were committed to that each of us would have to philosophically change the way we lived. It only took three months for all but three board members to resign.
